Hugh Millward and Cristian Suteanu honoured for bringing the International Symposium on Digital Earth to HalifaxThursday, October 29, 2015 - 15:15
Halifax, October 29, 2015 – Hugh Millward and Cristian Suteanu have received a Destination Halifax Ambassador Award for their efforts to secure Halifax as the host destination for the 9th International Symposium on Digital Earth.
“In 2011 Cristian Suteanu along with his colleague Prof Hugh Millward conceived the idea of hosting the ISDE conference,” said Jeff Turner, New Business Development Manager, Destination Halifax. “The efforts paid off as their 2013 bid in Sarawak, Malaysia, to host the 2015 conference met with success.”
The conference took place at the World Trade and Convention Centre from October 5 to October 9 and attracted over 350 delegates from twenty countries. Discussions included but were not limited to innovation in geomatics, space and satellite technologies, environmental protection and conservation, as well as Nova Scotian expertise in ocean and atmospheric sciences.
The International Society for Digital Earth principally promotes academic exchange, science and technology innovation, education and international collaboration towards Digital Earth. It explores Digital Earth as an enabling technology to play key roles in economic and social sustainable development, environmental protection, disaster mitigation, natural resources conservation and improvement of living standards.
“Digital Earth concerns the use of digital technologies to monitor, map, and model our planet's environments. Halifax is a perfect location to showcase Canadian leadership in this field,” said Hugh Millward. “Maritimes universities and colleges have been world leaders in developing programs in geomatics, and Nova Scotia has a large cluster of agencies and institutions related to geomatics, digital technologies, and the environment. Besides, Halifax is a great venue for international delegates, especially in the Fall!”
The Ambassador Program is an alliance of individuals and organizations who achieve economic growth for the Halifax region through the promotion of Halifax as a premier meetings and conventions destination. The program has been led by Destination Halifax since 2002.
