Kate Shewan honoured for contributions to HalifaxFriday, October 23, 2015 - 16:00
Halifax, October 23, 2015 – Kate Shewan has received a Destination Halifax Ambassador Award for the success of bringing the Canadian Professional Association for Transgender Health Conference (CPATH) 2015 to Halifax.
“Kate championed the idea of seeing this biennial conference in Halifax,” said Helene Moberg, Executive Director, Sales, Destination Halifax. “The Province of Nova Scotia recently made positive policy changes on trans-health issues. Kate, along with the association, wanted to continue to support these changes by inviting their members from across Canada to Halifax.”
The conference took place at the Atlantica Hotel Halifax from October 1 to October 4 and attracted 150 delegates from across Canada. Discussions focused on determinants of trans health, clinical practice, professional development and creating systems change.
CPATH - the largest national professional organization for transgender health in the world - is devoted to the health care of individuals with gender variant identities. CPATH’s goal is to further the understanding and health care of individuals with gender variant identities by professionals in medicine, psychology, law, social work, counselling, psychotherapy, family studies, sociology, anthropology, sexology, speech and voice therapy and other related fields.
“Given the recent policy changes by the Province of Nova Scotia related to trans health, I couldn’t think of a better place for this year’s conference,” said Kate Shewan. “Halifax has many LGBTQ+-positive spaces for delegates to enjoy.”
The Ambassador Program is an alliance of individuals and organizations who achieve economic growth for the Halifax region through the promotion of Halifax as a premier meetings and conventions destination. The program has been led by Destination Halifax since 2002.
