Edward II and The Jew of Malta
February 14, 2012  - February 26, 2012

Vile Passeist Theatre presents two plays by Christopher Marlowe in repertory at the Bus Stop Theatre: Edward II and The Jew of Malta.

Edward II tells the story of a monarch whose love for a low-born nobleman enrages the court and fractures a kingdom. The Jew of Malta is a harrowing tale about a merchant who seeks retribution on the bigoted government that is persecuting him.

Marlowe boldly encourages us to reconsider our own assumptions about revenge and masculinity, while exploring early-modern perspectives on "the Other" in society.

Intense and unmissable, these plays prove that Elizabethan drama can be just as compelling today as it was 400 years ago. To reserve your tickets, please call 802-5223 or email vilepasseist@gmail.com. Tickets can be paid for at the door. Cash only.

Dartmouth Community Concerts Presents Hill & Davison
February 17, 2012  - February 18, 2012

Dartmouth Community Concert Association (DCCA) presents the third concert in their 2011-12 season with James Hill (ukulele) and Anne Davison (cello) (on Friday, February 17 at 8:00 p.m. at Woodlawn United Church, Dartmouth.

One of Canada's foremost - indeed one of the world's - foremost players of the often-under-estimated ukulele, James Hill's (www.jameshillmusic.com) unpredictable solo concerts have been delighting concertgoers worldwide.

His recording with cello and real life partner Anne Davison, True Love Don't Weep, garnered the unique duo a Canadian Folk Music Award, and with his new release of Man With a Love Song he seems poised to take his place in the ranks of today's best young songwriters.

Earning a Bachelor of Music degree from University of British Columbia in 2002, James went on to co-author the Ukulele in the Classroom method booth series with J. Chalmers Doane, the trail-blazing teacher who pioneered the use of ukuleles in Canadian schools. Cellist Anne Davison (www.annedavison.net) focuses on her two loves: dance and cello, and has created over a dozen pieces combining these artforms. She is currently working on her latest piece, My Undoing, and has collaborated with many composers and choreographers over the years.

This will be a unique and fun concert for DCCA; don't miss it! This year's DCCA season runs from October to May, with all other concerts taking place on Friday or Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. (with the exception of the Chung/Bax concert on Sunday afternoon). The remaining two concerts on this season's eclectic roster are: Lucille Chung and Alessio Bax, Piano (www.alessiobax.com) - presented with the cooperation of Debut Atlantic, Sunday, April 29, 2012 David Greenberg (Violin) and Chris Norman (Flute) (www.chrisnorman.com), Friday, May 11, 2012 All concerts are held at Woodlawn United Church, 54 Woodlawn Road in Dartmouth.

Freedom by Reaching the Wooden World: Escaping Slaves and the British Navy during the War of 1812
February 28, 2012

The British Navy entered Chesapeake Bay in March 1813 to harass the American heartland, drawing attention and troops away from the battlefields along the border between British North America and the northern American states and frontier territories. From the first appearance of the British Navy off Norfolk to the return of the Chesapeake's Tangier Island to the United States in March 1815 enslaved Black Americans ran to the British seeking freedom. At first, unprepared for the steady flow of people seeking refuge the British adapted, encouraging the flight of slaves, using volunteer former slaves as guides for raids and eventually organizing a Battalion of Coloured Marines. As news spread of the British reaction to refugees, thousands of enslaved Black Americans used the British Navy as a means of escaping slavery. Some volunteered to help the British fight their former slave masters, while others wanted nothing to do with the war between America and Britain. This talk by Thomas Malcomson will explore the path of escape from first contact between running slaves and the British Navy through Vice Admiral Cochrane's proclamation offering freedom, the creation of the Coloured Marine Companies to the final flood of refugees at the end of the war. The American reaction to this activity will be discussed and differences noted between the British use of slaves during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Feb 28 - 7:30 pm
