February 12, 2012 Become part of the Maritime Museum family the second Sunday of every month during Family Sundays. On February 12th, make mini versions of Sailor’s Valentines. Legend has it that the beautiful pieces of shell mosaic art known as Sailor’s Valentines were made by bored and lonely sailors to pass the time while at sea. It is most likely that the sailors purchased them as mementos to be brought back home to their wives, girlfriends or mothers. Materials will be supplied, but feel free to bring your own special shells or beach treasures. This family programming is included with admission. Event begins at 1:30 p.m.

The colour palate primarily used by Katie Vatour resides in earth tones, crimsons and charcoals, emphasizing the atmosphere of subterranean spaces that are being discovered from long abandoned or unexplored depths. Primary materials are paper, masking tape, string, cardboard scraps and various wet and dry mediums. The range and treatment of media causes the resulting scenes to balance between rawness and beauty, resulting in visceral and dark, yet attractive images.
