Special Events at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site
The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site is now open for the 2013 season. The Halifax Citadel has once again come alive this season complete with 78th Highlander pageantry, pipes and drum performances, guided tours, and of course the historic noon gun - a must-see for locals and visitors alike. Special events in June include: June 1: War of 1812 Band Concert The Tri-Service Cadets and Fife and Drum will join forces with the Citadel’s own 78th Highlanders to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the infamous battle between the HMS Shannon and the USS Chesapeake during the War of 1812. Enjoy traditional music and military demonstrations from this era inside the walls of the historic British fort. Event takes place between 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. June 8-9: World War II D-Day Commemorative Display Commemorate Canada’s contribution to the D-Day landings on June 6, 1945 with a World War II living history display featuring uniformed re-enactors, dioramas, models and authentic period vehicles.

WWII Encampment and Veteran’s Memorial Service

Memory Lane hosts the Atlantic Canadian World War II Living History Association for a two day encampment on the Heritage Village grounds. Dedicated to the authentic portrayal of the soldiers, sailors, air force personnel, and civilians of World War II, members in period uniforms will set up an encampment on Friday and Saturday. Specific prgramming to be announced closer to the date. Event takes place from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. each day.

Exhibition: The Odyssey of Wawel’s Treasures 1939-1961

Wawel, the Royal Castle in Krakow, Poland is home to numerous treasures accumulated by Polish monarchs over centuries. Did you know that most of these treasures were evacuated from Wawel following the outbreak of the Second World War? They were safely deposited under the custody of the Government of Canada until 1961. Explore the story of how these treasures found their way to Canada and back to Poland.

Discover Culture: Viking Wire Weaving
June 1, 2013 Many cultures around the world celebrate Midsummer around the date of the summer solstice. This is a particularly special time in Scandinavian culture and the tradition dates back to the Viking age. Viking wire weaving, similar to Trichinopoly weaving, is a metalwork that has evolved from a type of knitting that Vikings used for textiles. Come learn this beautiful art and make a bracelet.
